Created by Patty Thomas of Daisy Yarns of San Francisco for individual use (not to be copied or published without permission, www.daisyyarns.com), November 2008.
Both sides are knitted at the same time using the Jacquard style of knitting (once you master this the possiblities are unlimited with two-sided patterned knitting). The finished piece has fringe and beading.
Finished Approximate Size: 50” with the fringe
Materials: 1 skein of Tilli Tomas Raw Silk – Black, 1 skein of Tilli Tomas Raw Silk – Majestic, Knitting Needles Size 3 and Size 5, Beads: 20 crystal pale purple size 4 mm and black glass beads size 5 mm one STRAND from a bead shop, Yarn Needle, Sewing Needle, black cotton or silk thread.
1. First tie together the ends of both colors BEFORE casting on. Using a Size 3 Needle cast on 29 sets of stitches making sure that no two same colors are next to each other. For practical purposes we are calling the black Color A and the majesty purple Color B
2. Switch to the Size 5 Needles (for the first three rows you really don’t see the pattern).
a. Knit the first stitch color A as a normal stitch (you will do this for the entire project for the 1st stitch at the beginning of each row).
b. Next pull both color strands: Color A and Color B over the top of the project to the front! Purl the next stitch with ONLY color B. Afterwards pull both strands over the top to the back for the next stitch.
c. Knit the next stitch using ONLY Color A and pull both strands over the top of the project to the back for the next stitch!
d. REPEAT “B” AND “C” until you reach near the end of the project about 41 to 42 inches.
If you haven’t done this type of knitting before it takes a little practice to work both strands. There are dozens of ways to hold the threads; the most popular method uses the left hand. I am not left thinking so this was no option. I place my right hand between the two colors as I knit and that works for me. MOST IMPORTANT TIP: Make sure you examine carefully each row to make sure you don’t accidental forget to carry the strands over the top or knit two stitches together in the same color. After a while you will get it and it will go fairly fast.
3. Bind off at the end of the project Knitting both Color A and Color B together as you bind off.
a. Stitch up the sides of the scarf NOT with the Raw Silk yarn, but regular sewing thread either cotton or silk and a regular hand sewing needle.
4. For the fringe, cut 29 strands for each end for a total of 58 strands. These strands should be 11 inches in length.
a. Use a yarn needle to feed the yarn through the ends which are on the tight side and double knot them at the top where it runs through the bind off row. Trim any extra long ends with scissors.
5. For the crystal beading, I used sparingly 10 crystal beads for each end, 5 of each side of the ends where the binding off was done using a beading needle and silk thread. It gives a slight hint of sparkle without being overdone!
6. For the black beading after I have affixed the fringe in step 4. Above I thread one bead on the “ends of the fringe”, double knotting them as well. I do not bead every strand, but about every other. HOWEVER, I do knot the ends of the strands even if they are not beaded. I like the look of the intermittent beading on the ends...it gives it an artsy look without being overstated or overdone.
a. Helpful hint for the black glass beads: Keep a small glass of water handy and dampen the fringe ends to make it easier to slide the bead through it.
